To know me is to know I love old people. The sight of old people doing pretty much anything could make me cry at a moment’s notice. An old couple watching the sunset? Crying. An old woman walking her dog? Crying. An old man holding a hand-written grocery list? Dead.
One day, I will make a coffee table book of film photos I’ve taken of old people. For now, I’m going to file that dream in the “not for right now” folder and hand the mic over to the Finnish-Norwegian artist duo Riitta Ikonen and Karoline Hjorth. In a collaborative project, named Eyes As Big As Plates, they use photography to explore a “continual search for modern human’s belonging to nature.” They feature professors, artists, fishermen, farmers, housewives, etc. and fuse them with the land. “Here nature acts as both content and context: characters literally inhabit the landscape wearing sculptures they create in collaboration with the artists,” their website explains. Their intentionally chosen senior demographic points to an overlooked community within photography, and within society. These photos aim to create new ideas about who we are and where we belong.
I hope these brighten up your Monday! xx Alex
The grocery list tho. And the woman wearing lily pads. Love her.
Seeing these pictures after a 13hour workday made me smile and made me relaxed.
Beautiful photography work. Thank you for sharing!
